Water your trees, shrubs & perennials.

Just a reminder folks to water your woody plants and your herbaceous ones too! When attempting to water trees and shrubs when it is so dry; wet the entire root zone area first, the space between the trunk and the dripline - then you could let the hose trickle for a while - 15 - 60 minutes, depending on tree size. If you don't wet down the area first, the trickle water will find a crack and it will all run down the crack, not doing your plants much good. If the dry continues, water until the ground stays frozen, usually in Nov. Until the ground freezes, roots are still growing  but since we don't 'see' that end of the plant, we tend to forget about them. Mums and fall flowering plants really need water too, as they need plenty to keep blooming. Mums are very shallow rooted, neglected......they will likely die over winter in this drought, perennial or not!

  1. Yikes!! I forgot to warn my neighbor about his Mums! I've been teaching my neighbor Nancy how to garden as of late, and she is rather enjoying it alot.
