Hot weather...got water?

It's gonna be another scorcher. Don't forget to water your plants BEFORE they wilt. Some plants will tolerate more wilt then others. NO, you will not shock them if it is hot when you water, that's an old 'husbands tale.'  That's like saying if you were parched in the desert, and glass of water would kill you!
Always, water at the base of your plants, sprinklers are the WORST way to apply water and also wasteful. Applying water to the base avoids run-off from potentially diseased plants to adjoining plants. Also, wet plants are more susceptible to disease spores being successful if they land on them. When your plants are fruiting, or your flowers are producing, it also reduces soil splash. Using straw or mulch around the base will help to 'break' the water, or use a soft spray head of some sort. Containers and baskets should be watered daily, sometimes twice if they are jam packed with plants.

  1. Thanks for the pep talk on watering.... especially the advice on container veges. I have 2 tomatoes in pots, the bottom leaves are starting to turn a little yellow. I put tomato food on them yesterday, do you think they need something else? I'm thinking the container soil might be lacking some vitamins?

  2. Hi Kathy,
A shot a fertilizer never hurts, especially in pots as plant roots are limited in their search for water & nutrients. A very weak solution once a week is better than a standard dose once a month, gradual feeding not period gorging for the plant. Yellow leaves not uncommon, pick off but do not touch good leaves unless you wash your hands, in case it is the start of something viral. Old leaves normally die first if stressed. Container tomatoes will likely need water daily, poke your finger in the soil first to check, as the top will always look dry. Be sure they containers are free draining, no saucer! =)
