What a gorgeous daylily! This gal is in full bloom right now, 20-30 scapes (flower stems) per plant, and each scape has 8-16 buds on it. You don't even notice each bloom last only a day.....there are so many! Slightly fragrant, with the foliage about 24" tall with scapes 30-36". The botanical name for daylilies is 'Hemerocallis,' which in Greek means 'beauty for a day.' Both pics are Freedom Dove, one photo in shade one with sun on it. White flowers can tend to fade away in the landscape if planted to far away from the normal viewing area, so keep them closer to the house, or planting them in mass, even far away can be dramatic in the garden. Daylilies are very drought tolerant once established. Prefer full sun but do fine in partial shade. Not fussy about soil, perfect for edging with, tolerant of road salt & walnut trees, very carefree, water once or twice after planting......and they won't need you. Perfect for the busy person!
Many of the daylily varieties also had leaf browning like the iris this year. Freedom Dove showed no browning, making it an excellent - more resistant plant to what ever that 'browning issue is.' I am still planning to send a plant sample to the U of M to find out what it is.........but since it's unlikely that anything will help yet this year, I have been slow to get to it. The priority list just never gets shorter as the season moves on. We have these at the field today, Mankato Market Sat.
