Weekend Connection

Saturday from 8-12 we are at the Mankato Farmers Market.
Sunday from 9 ish to 2 something ish at the Whiskey River lower parking lot.
Closed at the field location Sat. & Sun.

too many cucumbers....not enough raspberries

We GOT it.

The ten day forecast says partly cloudy and 82 degrees. Yes, I am blonde and really want to think that will happen! Decided what to do w/all those overgrown zucchinis, have a chucking contest, for males and females, farthest throw gets a $25 dollar gift cert to EWG, at our Farm Festival.
Remember to bring a chair, so when your not throwing zukes you have a place to sit.

Festival weather

For August 8th, I have ordered 78-80 degrees, mostly cloudy and a light breeze. Sound good?
Checking the 10 day forecast, which only goes out to the Saturday before, it shows partly sunny and 81, so we might be in luck! Even w/ the 1/2" of rain we got, the field was totally drivable by late morning. Remember to bring you chairs!

Ahh...the summer annuals.

Above is Helichrysum, aka 'strawflower.' It's dry and crunchy feeling, so cool. I love to use these in my bouquets and dried fall arrangements. They come in white, pink, red, coral, peach, yellow & orange. No blues or purples....sorry Deb!
Amaranthus, a gorgeous grain head, and an important food source in South America. I grow the burgundy and this one called 'Hot Biscuits.' It also gets used fresh and dried. In one season it will grow 6 ft. tall.

Statice, a crowd favorite especially in blue, again..fresh and dried. This comes in white, yellow, peach, light & dark pink, blue, purple. I have never been a fan of the peach, it always looks dirty, and the color just fades away in bouquets, so why bother?

Zinnia. So pretty. When I first had plans for my cut flower operation, I thought...I'll never plant zinnias, they are an old grandma flower. Well if the garden shoes fit! I love zinnias! The only issue I have is getting long enough stems for my armload bouquets, so they often end up in the handful size, which is a shorter bouquet. Zinnias come in white, coral, pinks, reds, yellows, gold, lime, orange (my favorite). Not all flowers come in all colors, some have only a few colors in their pallette, others many. It seems a flower cultivar with true blue, will not have true red and visa versa.
Wed. is bouquet day, call me if you want to pick one up tomorrow. I plan to have in them: sunflower plus the above beauties and a few other sweet things like buddleia.

More Rain!

Another storm just passed over. I tilled most of the afternoon with my little John Deere (this farm only has green) and it really was kinda dry already despite all of the recent rain. No tilling tomorrow! Yes, it's true, the gal that puts together the bodacious bouquets, also tills with the tractor, paints the signs, hauls the water tanks, plants & picks..... and is sure to fall on her butt in the mud again tomorrow!

We Got Peeps!

We got people! Well scarecrows actually, but toooooo cute to scare anyone away! My sister Lorie made this family, so talented. They are adorable. We are both glad she didn't have them up last week before the last wind storm.
Little Boy. So sweet (only because he is not real!) =)

The whole family, hanging out at Earthworks Gardens. Stop by and welcome the new family of strawmeisters to the farm! Great photo 'op' for kids!
