At the Farmers Market Saturday

We plan to be at the Farmers Market in Mankato Sat., 8-noon. We will have winter squash, potatoes, maybe raspberries & cherry tomatoes. I should have lots of flowers, but not too many
(if any) large bouquets...most of my 'feature' flowers are done for the year.

A funny note about wedding flowers: I have worked w/many brides this summer, so far 'it's all good.' I am amazed at the differences in brides approaches to the 'wedding' flowers. I 'll have brides ask me what will be blooming 2 years from July? Are you kidding? Then, on the other end of the spectrum, I'll get a call Friday wanting to pick that day for the Saturday wedding. The least amount of planning, was the bridesmaids that showed up at the market and just picked their bouquets from my buckets. I also have some that call or stop out 2-3 monthes in advance and have it all planned out. The most popular colors were white, lime green, bronze/brown.

Welcome New Follower

Hi Shelley - thanks for joining my blog!

Sounds like FROST???

WCCO is claiming frost for Sat. night/Sun. a.m.
Can't quite decide if that a blessing or not at this point. I finally got out to the field and really accomplised a lot this week. Got all the potted perennials snugged up together in an empty iris row, waiting for the November straw cover. Still need to water 2-3 times a week, 400 gallons a time. I did get a new storage space for all my garden tools/pots etc. After 4 years, my semi trailer that was FULL of goods from my house since the 06 tornado, is nearly empty....well not for long! We plan to park it next to the machine shed, and it will be the new garden shed!!! yahoo. That will hold alot of the stuff cluttering up my garage and flower shop.
Stop by the field for squash, pumpkins and potatoes. May be raspberries today too.

Pruning woody plants

Woody plants are of course your trees & shrubs. Pruning out dead or diseased parts can be done at any time. Wrong time of year to prune your spring flowering shrubs. They have already set their buds for next year ie: lilac, flowering almond, cherry. Rule of thumb: pruning back flowering shrubs shortly after the flowering period. On your other deciduous woodies (ones that lose their leaves) prune back after leaf shed if needed. If you really need to severely rejuvenate shrubs, some can be cut back to about 12" and come back nicely, though it will take a few years to be full grown again ie: Viburnums (American Cranberry), potentilla, lilac, spirea, ninebarks.
Next spring I plan to offer a 2-3 session course on landscaping, care, design etc. stay tuned.
Classes will announced in about 2-3 months.

My enertia....

I think it left me. Last 2 weeks, not to much field work happening. Now it's hard to push the 'off' button back 'on.' I remember this from last year. It's like subconciously you are DONE for the year. But there is so much left to do!!! hmm. After the end of a long and mostly hot season it's a struggle to finish the work. GET OUT THERE. Shut the computer off, shut the computer off!!!
ok, bye for now
=)
