Iris Babies

'Heather Carpet' in above photo. All of these shown here have been blooming for about 1 week. They are in the class called 'SDB.' Standard Dwarf Bearded. They form nice big clumps quickly. One rhizome can turn into 20 in 2 years!
This awesome yellow is 'Vavoom.' A very solid yellow falls.

This cutie is named 'What Again.' Seems like it should have a question mark after the name? Love it's colors. In an iris description, the 3 main parts are described as: the 'standards' which are the purple petals that are 'standing.' The 'falls' which are the tannish petals which are 'falling' and lastly the 'beard' which is the part that looks like the fuzzy blue caterpillar climbing out onto the falls. So, if you are ordering one by description only, now you can get a visual of what it might look like. When an iris is all one color, it is referred to as 'light blue self.' Like the one pictured below, all parts light blue. Or....might say light blue self with white beard if that were the case.
This awesome blue sweetie is "Rachel's Eyes." Finally have enough to sell this year. Their first year here, many got washed away after a big rain. Thanks for hangin' around Rachel. Iris can be ordered now for summer pick-up.

Closed for today

Cold, wet, rainy, freezing, soggy, muddy, chilly......need I say more?

CLASSES FOR 2010

Info for garden tour and bouquet classes. Click on link at right that says "class schedule for 2010" for the details.

Just as I Predicted........

We had May weather in April, now April weather in May. When I was a kid working in a cafe in St. Peter, it was all you heard the 'old farmers' talk about, everyone over 40, (who seemed really old at the time) talked about it.......the weather. Who cares, was what I thought! Well, maybe I hadn't hit that threshold yet of 'caring.' Now, it runs my LIFE! On cold crappy days I can only accomplish about half the work, as frozen fingers don't move that fast. It was days like yesterday, outside tagging iris in that horrific cold wind from 9am-6pm, I had to wonder, did I make the right decision to pick an outside job like this? When it's warm and sunny, iris blooming and scads of customers browsing thru them, order blanks in hand.....I'll feel different, it was the right decision.
FYI if it is rainy and cold like predicted for Friday, we will be closed. Always call ahead if not sure. 507-382-9337

The good, the bad and the beautiful.

First the good; This spring weather has been incredible. I am soooo far ahead in the flower field on many things. No frost to worry about (yet), and just about the right amount of rain, so I have had to do only a little watering.
The Bad; the tulips (the ones NOT eaten by the deer) and the timing of the lilacs were off, (thanks warm weather!) Yes it's true, we may not have any of those tulip bouquets this spring. Sorry. But won't be long and the iris and peony bouquets will start.
The beautiful: Yes the uneaten tulips were beautiful. So, maybe next year!
My friend Joanie took the pics, thanks!
